This is “The State, Of California,” Doug Sovern is away. Today we’re joined by Sonoma State Political Scientist Dr. David McCuan.

The last week has been quite eventful in politics as we have seen the release of a draft opinion by US Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr. as well as worries grow about the state of the economy and a possible recession.  

Closer to home in California, we saw the release earlier this week by the state Department of Finance about shifts in migration to and from the state as well as how the population here in California is shifting.

Next week, Governor Newsom issues his “May Revise” signaling the start of serious budget negotiations in the Sacramento as details are hammered out over what is expected to be another record-setting surplus. The forthcoming budget reflecting that surplus comes with demands, all amidst a backdrop of the state emerging from COVID-19 .
