At strategic moments in his ministry, Jesus crossed boundaries by ministering in Gentile territories. In his journey to Sidon, Jesus encounters a Canaanite woman who desires Jesus to deliver her daughter from a demon. From the perspective of the disciples, Jesus reveals the way his kingdom mission is crossing social boundaries. From the perspective of the woman, we see the way Jesus is inviting her into faith—he’s inviting her to overcome her ignorance and the scorn of others and to trust him humbly. Thus, the journey of following Jesus overcomes both external and internal barriers.
