When we have childhood trauma our natural responses are shut down. We are not able to fight or flee. This activates our stress hormones. It changes our body and puts us into a sympathetic state, to ready us to fight, flight or freeze; but when we can't, when we're impaired, we have to stay frozen in that situation.
Our body's stress response does not shut off. Our hormones continue to be elevated. And so, what happens over time, if we are constantly experiencing that stress over and over, it changes our biology.
