Sermon Notes:

Intro: Following last week's prophetic picture of a "car crash" or "sideswipe," we explore how God remains faithful even through unexpected "shipwrecks" in our lives and on His mission. Using Paul's journey to Rome in Acts 27-28, we see God's purpose and provision unfold amidst chaos and apparent disaster.

Key Points:

  1. Paul's Shipwreck Journey (Acts 27-28):
    • Mission & Warning: Paul, a prisoner heading to Rome as God directed, warns against sailing into a storm, but is ignored.
    • Storm & Promise: A violent storm leads to despair, but God assures Paul no lives will be lost, only the ship. Paul declares faith: "it will be exactly as He told me."
    • Shipwreck & Survival: They wreck on Malta. Paul survives a viper bite, amazing the locals.
    • Unexpected Ministry: Stranded for months, Paul heals many on the island, turning the disaster into a significant mission opportunity. God's plan included this "detour."
  2. God's Unfailing Promise: Like Paul knew he'd reach Rome because God said so, we can trust God's promises even when circumstances seem contradictory. Shipwrecks, storms, or snakebites don't nullify God's ultimate destination for us. Our confidence is in His word, not the journey's ease.
  3. God's Purpose in Detours: God doesn't just get us through shipwrecks; He often uses them. Paul's detour brought healing and the gospel to an entire island. What looks like a setback can be a setup for God's unexpected work and glory.
  4. Modern Testimony (Sam's Story): Moving family to Mexico for mission work, their car and possessions burn up on the freeway – a clear "shipwreck." Discouraged, told to quit. But holding onto God's promises led to unexpected, miraculous insurance provision covering far more than lost, enabling the mission. God used the disaster to provide.
  5. Living with the End in Mind: We know our ultimate destination is secure in Christ (John 14:18, Heb 10:23). Troubles will come (John 16:33), but they aren't the end. Remembering God's final promises gives us perspective and endurance through present difficulties.

Conclusion: Life on mission with God sometimes involves shipwrecks – unexpected crises that derail our plans. But God remains utterly faithful to His word and purposes. He not only sees us through the storm but often redeems the wreckage for His greater glory and the salvation of others.

Call to Action:

  • Identify Your Shipwreck: Are you in a "sideswipe" situation – something unexpected and difficult derailing your plans or faith?
  • Remember God's Promises: Recall what God has spoken over your life. His ultimate destination for you is secure.
  • Trust His Purpose: Even if you don't understand the detour, trust God is working (Rom 8:28) and can use this for good.
  • Seek Prayer: If you're struggling with hardship, sin, or feeling off-course, come receive prayer and stand with others in the battle. God is here to restore and set free.
