Adam Stern, 37, metastatic kidney cancer, Newton
Adam was diagnosed in December 2017 with stage 3 kidney cancer. Later that year doctors discovered the cancer spread to his lungs. He was 33 years old.
He's married with a 4-year old son. His son was only 11-months old when he was diagnosed.
His early symptoms were weight loss which he attributed to exercise and running around after his young son. He decided to visit his primary care doctor when he started having night sweats and saw blood in his urine.
Adam was sent for tests and they discovered the tumor on his kidney.
He's been treated with surgery and immunotherapy drugs.
Adam is a psychiatrist and is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Adam has written numerous articles about his journey with kidney cancer, with reflections on being a young father facing such a difficult diagnosis. His essays have published in the New York Times and Boston Globe.
He recently published a book, "Committed: Dispatches from a Psychiatrist in Training."
