We may imagine that God loves us because of what we have done- good works, made a decision for Him, avoided particular sins we see others doing- yet that is not at all true! Compared to others, we are nobody special, except that God has chosen to have mercy, give us faith in the Savior, and draw us to Himself. Being saved is not a matter of our desserts, but of God's grace in Christ! This is a comfort when we feel defeated, guilty, unworthy, or confused. It also demolishes our pride when we imagine ourselves better than others.
