It was the strangest of sights to behold – an elderly, well-educated man confessing his involvement in the wicked acts of fraud, popularly known in Nigeria as ‘419’.
At 62 years old, Mr Ededet Williams was supposed to be enjoying the fruits of his labours. However, the retired teacher was reaping the seeds he had sown earlier in life - in the most devilish of manners. Indeed, anything that starts dubiously must surely end dubiously.
Speaking before the congregation at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN), the grey-haired pensioner admitted that he had a serious confession to give. He had been involved in fraud to an alarming degree, specialising in duping political aspirants in the brackets of millions. According to Mr Williams, he got involved in fraud while working as a music teacher. He functioned with a hardhearted group who pretended to be witchdoctors, duping the spiritually gullible with their clever tricks.
Much to the shock of the crowd, the elderly teacher explained how he would approach ex-governors and politicians under the guise of encouraging their political ambitions. He would arrange them to meet a ‘native doctor’, who, being part of the plot, would declare that the person concerned would be victorious in any upcoming elections – after consultation with the ‘gods’ via a ‘spiritual mirror’. All of this was part of an elaborate spiritual hoax intended to hoodwink victims, who were then led down a wicked path of deceit under the guise of raising requisite funds for the forthcoming elections.
According to Ededet, the ‘fake witchdoctor’ would promise to diabolically provide the huge amount of money required but under certain stringent conditions. Giving an example, he explained that if N500m was the amount required, the dupers would ask their victim to bring at least 10% of that amount to begin the ritual. Although the individuals concerned wouldn’t have such lofty amounts, they would bring money amounting to N10m or N20m. This money would be ‘burned’ in a ceremony – all part of the supposed spiritual production of funds. However, unbeknown to the politician, the pot had a special pipe underneath it in which the money entered and mere paper was burned, creating an illusion of the witchcraft that would allegedly bring about the huge amount requested.
After monetary funds were insufficient to meet the said target, the dupers would give ridiculous conditions, asking their victims to bring a white cat or a certain rare type of fish which had to be alive. Given the impossible nature of such tasks, they would soon get frustrated and eventually stop the process of the ‘ritual’. By this time, they had parted with millions – all of which lined the pocket of Mr Ededet and his notorious group.
Raking in huge amounts of money and living large, Mr Williams soon became concerned that people would begin questioning the source of his wealth – especially considering his meagre salary as a teacher. In an elaborate attempt to cover up, the elderly man decided to align himself with Emmanuel TV, inviting people to his large home to watch the programs of The SCOAN and regularly giving out Morning Water to people. He hoped this would create the impression his blessings came from God – whereas it was diabolical means he used to obtain them.
However, the repercussions of Mr Ededet’s hidden life soon began to manifest in the open. Firstly, he could not give any account of the huge amounts of money he had extorted. Everything went as rapidly as it came. Secondly, his son began stealing and duping his colleagues at school – afflicted with the same spirit that operated in his father. Realising that the time had finally come for him to embrace light, Mr Williams came to The SCOAN with a heavy heart to give his confession and plead for forgiveness and deliverance.
