Hey everyone I’m Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.
This week we are starting a new series on Sunday nights titles “Jesus Christ as Our High Priest.”
The book of Hebrews isn’t the most popular book in the New Testament.
In many respects it is neglected.
The Jewish, or Old Testament, back ground that permeates every chapter has probably contributed to its neglect by many pastors.
The book of Hebrews portrays an exalted concept of Jesus Christ.
This week we are talking about,
Christ, The Humiliated One.
Text
Hebrews 2:9 (ESV)
9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Scripture Reading
Hebrews 2:1-18 (ESV)
Introduction
The new covenant could be established only by the death of the Testator.
Hebrews 9:16 (ESV) says
16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.
God is the one establishing the new covenant.
The God of heaven cannot die.
For the covenant to become effective, God left the safety of heaven in the person of Jesus Christ and took on Himself the form of man.
God as a true man could die.
This is what happened to Jesus at Calvary.
The taking on of human form was a humiliating experience for Jesus Christ.
Yet He did it so that we might have eternal life.
In this particular chapter of Hebrews, the humiliation of Jesus is vividly brought home to us.
