Former President Trump attempted to neutralize abortion as a damaging issue for him in this year’s presidential election, but it appears the move is backfiring.
One day after Trump said he would not support a federal ban on abortion, but continued to brag about overturning Roe v Wade, Arizona’s Supreme Court ruled that state’s near-total ban on abortion can take effect.
And just in case you don’t know it, Arizona is one of a handful of states that will determine whether President Biden is re-elected or not, and the polls there show former President Trump consistently ahead. But now, with that abortion ban becoming law because Roe V Wade was overturned by Trump’s appointees to the U-S Supreme Court, the Democrats are pouncing.
Vice President Kamala Harris will go to Tucson on Thursday to talk about reproductive freedom, there will be an all-out mobilization to get women in particular to the polls, and that could get a big boost from a ballot measure to amend the Arizona Constitution, to restore legal abortion until viability, which is generally about 24 weeks. If abortion rights groups can qualify that for the November ballot, it could have a dramatic impact on turnout. In the meantime, if the Arizona ban does go into effect, it will likely mean even more women coming from out of state to California to get abortions they can’t get in their own state.
