In fall 2020, Jason experienced GI symptoms and saw his doctor. Jason was diagnosed with Stage II colon cancer and six months later, he was diagnosed with Stage III rectal cancer. His doctors recommended that Jason undergo genetic testing to determine if his cancer was inherited due to a cancer-causing genetic mutation. Tests confirmed that Jason has Lynch Syndrome, an inherited condition that increases one’s risk for a variety of cancers. Lynch Syndrome increases the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer by up to 80 percent. Dr. Matt Yurgelun is a medical oncologist and cancer genetics specialist at Dana-Farber, where he evaluates and cares for individuals with a wide variety of GI cancers. He also serves as the Director of Dana-Farber's Lynch Syndrome Center, that evaluates people and families with known or suspected Lynch Syndrome, including the oversight and development of personalized cancer preventative care plans for people with Lynch Syndrome.
