Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for May 23rd.
See a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck! It’s Lucky Penny Day, and if there were ever a day to look down while you walk—today’s the day. One shiny copper coin might just turn your whole day around... or at least give you an excuse to pause and feel a little superstitious. The poor penny often gets a bad rap—ignored, left behind, or told it’s not even worth bending down for. But today, we celebrate its charm, and maybe its wisdom. Which leads us into today’s quote from William Lowndes, who once said:
“Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.”
This one’s been floating around for centuries, originally as “pence and pounds,” but the idea remains rock solid: if you pay attention to the small things, the big things will follow. It’s a reminder that success, wealth, or even peace of mind doesn’t usually arrive in sweeping moments—it builds, quietly, through little decisions and tiny habits. And isn’t that exactly what the penny represents? Small, easy to overlook, seemingly insignificant. But add enough of them together, and suddenly you’ve got something substantial. The same goes for your time, your energy, and your choices. One good habit. One small step. One thoughtful decision.
Each is like a penny dropped in your personal piggy bank of progress. So today, if you spot a penny on the ground, pick it up—but not just for luck. Do it as a little act of mindfulness. A reminder that no effort is too small, and no moment is too minor, if it’s pointing you in the right direction. That's gonna do it for now. I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow - same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
