Unexpected patient deterioration is every med-surg nurse's nightmare.  Alissa, Caroline, and Chelsea welcome special guests Dr. Jacinda Bunch and Dr. Frank Overdyk to talk about new approaches to preventing patient deterioration through continuous monitoring.

Dr. Jacinda Bunch, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, where she received her PhD in nursing with a focus on healthcare systems, organizational culture, and team dynamics. Her research explores ways in which culture, context, mechanisms, and relationships impact patient safety programs, specifically Rapid Response Systems. Dr. Bunch currently teaches courses focusing on leadership, quality improvement, professional engagement, patient safety, health systems, nursing administration, and intraprofessional communication/teamwork for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.

Dr. Frank Overdyk, MD is an engineer and semi-retired Professor of Anesthesia from Charleston, South Carolina. His academic interest is mechanisms of respiratory depression from opioids and his passion is reducing preventable harm from opioids in ward patients. He has published extensively on these topics, is a consultant to medical technology companies, and is active in patient safety organizations and promoting surveillance monitoring on the ward.

Caroline Ashman, MSN, RN, CMSRN was born and raised in England. She had two dreams in life – to become a nurse and live in the United States. She accomplished the first task in 1985 and then in 1991, immigrated to America. She currently serves as a Division Director for Medical-Surgical Education for HCA. She has also been afforded the wonderful opportunity to teach Med Surg Review Courses across the United States and in Europe for AMSN. Collecting air miles and sharing stores along the way, she is thrilled to join the Podcast team and recognize that the specialty of medical surgical nursing is alive and well. Caroline lives with her husband Jimmy, in Tampa, FL and has two grown daughters, Jennifer & Emily.

 

 

Alissa Brown, MSN, RN, CMSRN, NPD-BC is a clinical nurse educator from the University of Utah Health. She has been working in the health care industry for almost 12 years, and started her nursing career as a med-surg bedside nurse on an Ortho, Trauma, and Surgical Specialty Unit. It was through that experience in the med-surg unit where she discovered a passion for education, and pursued a master’s degree. She is a lifelong learner, and loves to teach.  Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, she's not all work, and definitely enjoys play! She loves to travel, and tries to plan as many vacations each year as she can with family and friends. Alissa loves to read, listen to podcasts, and geek out to documentaries and crime shows on the weekends. She's a total fair weather fan when it comes to Utes Football, but will cheer in all the right places, or get mad when her husband tells her to during a game. Alissa is looking forward to conversations together on this AMSN podcast!

 

Chelsea Parker RN, BSN, CMSRN was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. She attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Since then she has pursued geriatric and palliative care nursing and developed a love for general medicine, which is where her foundation for med-surg nursing was built. As a young nurse looking for ways to bridge engagement between generations of nurses, she is excited about what this podcast will mean for AMSN.
