The young rooster in the story never learns to chirp seriously when his father is alive, but just playful. It is only when his father is gone that he suddenly realizes his responsibility and grows up all of a sudden. He does his job with a sense of responsibility despite what the other animals wind up saying, and is finally competent in his duties.
