A Journey of Language, Growth, and Autism Perspectives: Stephen’s Evolution
A Journey of Language, Growth, and Autism Perspectives: Stephen’s Evolution
Episode • May 22, 2023 • 18m

In this episode I talk about my workplace experiences and job interviews with Asperger’s, referring to some jobs I have done. Some of the topics I mention are:

Job interviews

Alterations to the interview process, including asking questions in simpler ways, along with being more direct and literal.

  • Consideration of tests to demonstrate job skills.
  • Disclosure of Asperger’s shouldn’t be a barrier to interviews and employment.

Training of prospective managers and colleagues

  • Increasing awareness of the condition, emphasising the need for clear communication about job expectations and treating individuals with respect and fairness.

  • Have opportunities for joining in social outings.

Benefits of hiring autistic workers

These can include loyalty, reliability, dedication, unique strengths and skills.  Some unique strengths and skills can include good eye for details, fast and accurate keyboard skills

Weaknesses can be turned into opportunities.

Despite my communication deficiencies, I showed I could do some telephone work, taking simple messages and dealing with simple enquiries.
