As the price of a gallon of gas continues to soar here in the Bay Area, California lawmakers try different approaches to bring it back down. It is rapidly becoming the number one issue for Californians, which may be why there’s such a fight over what to do about it in Sacramento
First, Republicans tried to suspend the gas tax, which is about 51 cents a gallon. But the legislature defeated that move yesterday, on a party line vote. Now the governor wants to come up with some sort of tax rebate, but not of the gas tax itself, and lawmakers are working on that. However, the Democrats are reluctant to go along with the governor’s proposal to delay the next scheduled increase in the gas tax this July.
Finally, there’s a new bill that would force the oil companies to reveal how much their cost and profit are each month, so California drivers would know exactly how much they’re being gouged, compared to other states.
