Today, we’re discussing a topic close to our hearts and, unfortunately, our oceans - plastic pollution. A recent groundbreaking study titled “On the Vertical Structure of Non-Buoyant Plastics in Turbulent Transport” provides new insights into how rivers, the arteries of our planet, are aiding in this crisis.
Rivers, particularly urban ones, are significant contributors to plastic pollution in our oceans, with around 1000 of them accounting for a staggering 80% of river-borne plastic emissions. These emissions aren’t just floating on the surface; they’re sinking, infiltrating river ecosystems in ways we have yet to understand fully.
