"Resentment can be helpful on the football field." - Bob Newton
Bob Newton was an All-American football player at University of Nebraska in 1970 and helped the school win their 1st national championship under coach Bob Devaney. Bob was instrumental in building the "Husker Power" national brand which led to bigger, faster, and stronger players under Boyd Epley's strength and conditioning program. Bob's story of being recruited by Tom Osborne from junior college in California, and respective recruiting trip to Lincoln on a cold January night in 1969, is classic.
Bob played in the NFL for 11 seasons after being drafted in the 3rd round by Chicago Bears - 5 seasons with the Bears, and 6 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks - Playing alongside (and against) some of the greatest players including Dick Butkus, Walter Payton, John Riggins, Dan Dierdorf, Jack Youngblood, Joe Green, Gale Sayers, and Steve Largent.
His playing career was cut short due to active addiction/alcoholism and Bob's life changed forever on July 12, 1983 when he checked into Valley General hospital for help. Beginning a life of recovery, Bob became a certified alcohol and drug counselor in 1986 and has been helping others in recovery ever since touching the lives of thousands of people.....Including me and my family!
On Christmas morning 2009 we did an intervention for my Father's drinking, and by the Grace of God and Divine Intervention, my family met Bob for 1st time. A Christmas Miracle. An amazing story. Lifelong friendships. Recovery. Healing. Sobriety. Hope. Gratitude. A new legacy.
