I missed my flight to Vegas a month ago (May 4) and in reading from Dale Carnegie's book "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" I stumbled upon a very useful framework when it comes to worst case scenarios.
I had thought that thinking of the worst case scenario would invite that outcome more into my life but the opposite is actually true.
When you bring that to your mind early it helps you get familiar from it, and then from there you have a clear understanding of what you do NOT want.
Here's the framework as talked in the book:
1. Ask yourself, "What is the worst that could possibly happen?"
2. Prepare to accept it if you have to
3. Calmly proceed and improve on the worst
The truth is... that the worst thing that could happen with me missing my flight is that I lose a day in Vegas and a couple hundred dollars of my parent's money.
I'm still full of joy inside and as my mom told me later in the car when she picked me up, "There are way bigger problems in life than money, like health problems, etc. etc. money really isn't that big of a deal in comparison."
This reframe can help reorient your brain towards action when that is really hard to do
