Submission is a word we do not like. We are a culture that believes that we should not yield to anyone. Instead, we need to stand up to people. We need to fight for our rights. We need to exercise our power. We need to show people who’s boss and that we cannot be pushed around. We want to put people in their place and have the last word. Our culture tells us that submission is weakness and inferiority. I think this is what is really hard for us. Telling us to submit makes us think in our minds that we are weak and we are inferior in some sense. But submission is not only a negative characteristic in our society, it was looked down upon in the first century Roman culture as well.
