California Senator Dianne Feinstein has been back on the job for a week now, but her return to Washington is not quieting concerns about her health. The senior Senator is still recovering from shingles, and some more prominent Democrats are saying they think it’s time for her to retire
There was relief when the 89-year-old Feinstein flew back to DC to reclaim her place in the Senate after a more than two-month absence, but that turned to dismay when people on the Hill saw how frail she was, needing a wheelchair and surrounded by aides at all times. The sense that she is no longer up to representing 39 million Californians has not only not been dispelled, it’s intensified, and more and more significant members of her party are urging her to step aside.
Feinstein insists she is well enough to do the work, she has no intention of retiring before her final term ends at the end of next year, and I think it’s a matter of honor and principle for her to stay until the end, even if she’s physically weak and mentally fading.
