Hebrews 10:24 (ESV)
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
Introduction
Everyone needs encouragement, no-one is exempt from the need to be encouraged by others.
This is particularly true in family circles.
Husbands need encouragement from their wives and wives need encouragement from their husbands.
Mothers need encouragement from their children and children need encouragement from their mothers.
Children in fact need encouragement from both parents constantly.
It is interesting to note how our text is translated in various bible versions.
The King James version put it like this, Hebrews 10:24 (KJV)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Provoke means to arouse to action, to excite, to stir up feelings.
The word is often used to reference arousing someone to anger, but in our text it is a strong word used to encourage love and good works.
The English Standard Version translates the verse Hebrews 10:24 (ESV)
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
Stir up means to move, to excite, to agitate.
The Good News Translation translates our text as Hebrews 10:24 (GNT)
24 Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good.
To be concerned is to show interest or care.
To help is to provide assistance.
The New International Version puts it Hebrews 10:24 (NIV)
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,
To spur is to prompt or motivate.
Whatever the version used, the verse urges us to help one another practice self giving love and perform good works for God and others.
