The race for president is about to get a lot more crowded, and two California tech moguls are planning to play key roles. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis plans to toss his hat in the ring for the Republican nomination tomorrow, with a big assist from Elon Musk.
South Carolina Senator Tim Scott just announced that he's running for the GOP presidential nomination too, with massive financial backing from Oracle founder Larry Ellison. Ellison has already donated $30 million to a SuperPAC that supports Scott, and is reportedly planning to kick in at least another 60 million to help the conservative Southern senator challenge former president Donald Trump for the nomination.
Scott also has won praise and financial support from Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk, but Musk has made it clear he will back DeSantis if he runs, and now that DeSantis is ready to declare tomorrow, Musk is going to help him do it. DeSantis will announce that he’s running for president tomorrow afternoon in a live conversation with Musk, streamed on Twitter. That doesn’t mean Musk won’t hedge his bets by donating money to Scott too, and we will see if he actually endorses DeSantis, but it’s clear, Bret and Patti, that these conservative Republican California billionaires, who combined are worth about a quarter of a trillion dollars, are going all in on trying to elect a Republican in 2024, and one not named Donald Trump.
