Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. One of the largest volcanic events in Roman history, the story was related by Pliny the Younger, a survivor who was just 17 years old when the event took place.
