The count of California’s recall ballots continues, and with about one and a half million left, it’s now clear that Governor Newsom will end up winning by about the same margin as he did when he was first elected, three years ago
The governor is up 63-37%, and his surprisingly large margin of victory is already raising his profile on the national stage ahead of next year’s midterm elections, and yes, the 2024 presidential race
The question at the moment for national political pundits is not whether Newsom will get re-elected to a second term as governor next year, he’s an overwhelming favorite now. But what role he will play for the Democrats nationally, and will he be on the short list of potential presidential nominees in 2024 or 2028? There is no question that in a matter of just a few weeks, he’s gone from endangered governor fighting for survival, to a much more powerful player for the national Democratic Party.
