John 17:1-5
The Glory Prayer of Jesus, Part 2

1. Election

2. Eternal Life, v. 3

a) eternal- means without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be.

b) life (zoe)- life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.

Two things happen when we fail to understand what Bible means by “eternal life”…
Heaven loses it’s glory
and right now is drained of its possibilities

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made though him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
-John 1:1-4

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” -John 10:10

a) only in God is this life available
b) we cannot know God in any way we choose

Doctrine of man…

1) purpose
2) problem
3) person

3. Example, v. 4

4. Exchange, v. 5

a) Jesus’ first coming- redemption…in secret, in grace and with the offer of salvation
b) Jesus’ second coming- judgement…in public, in judgment, no salvation available.

“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in[b] blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”
-Revelation 19:11-16

Questions for reflection…

How often do you feel there is something more, bigger and better in life and you are missing out on it?
Is there anything that God has given you to do that you have yet to finish?
What did you hear today that you will still be thinking about on Tuesday?
What is one prayer you will pray as a result of what you heard today?
