Ready for College? – Alarming and Dangerous…The Mental Health Crisis among College Stud

Ready For College? Archives - WebTalkRadio.net

On Ready for College? we often talk about the fact that the majority of students are not ready.

As college students, they don’t know how to manage their time or themselves, study productively, keep up with assignments, get enough sleep, and do college work in the face of what so many young people consider their newfound freedom at college.

This week, we’re going to talk about the very serious consequences of students being unprepared for and overwhelmed by college work — and how it undermines their mental health.

It is a serious problem. Psychology Today terms it The College Mental Health Crisis. And this publication is not alone. Organizations such as The American Psychological Association call it the Crisis on Campus.

No matter the description, what we are seeing is a rise in anxiety, depression, eating disorders, sleep deprivation, drugs, attempted suicides, binge drinking, sexual assaults, and a “hook- up” culture of sexuality.  The numbers are really alarming.

Today’s college students are embroiled in a serious battle with mental health issues. Much of it can be traced back to the frustration of being unprepared for college.

Our guest, Mark Kipfmueller, PhD, headed up a university counseling center for 15 years, and he joins us to talk about the role of Counseling Centers on campuses: the many ways that such centers can help students and how centers work. This is a program parents won’t want to miss.
