Welcome to The Daily Quote—a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for January 27th.
Today we celebrate Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. Yes, bubble wrap—the greatest stress reliever ever invented.
Because let's be honest, nothing beats the sheer joy of popping those little air pockets one by one. It’s silly, it’s satisfying, and it’s a reminder that life doesn’t always have to be so serious.
That brings me to today’s quote from Ludwig Wittgentein who once said...
"If people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done."
Now, I know what you’re thinking. "Andrew, what does bubble wrap have to do with silly things leading to intelligence?"
Hear me out. The very existence of bubble wrap is proof of this idea. Back in 1957, two engineers, Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding, originally created bubble wrap while trying to invent a new kind of textured wallpaper. Wallpaper! Can you imagine an entire room covered in bubble wrap? Sure, it would’ve been interesting, but I don’t see it making the cover of Interior Design Digest.
Still, their silly experiment didn’t go to waste. A few years later, they realized bubble wrap made for incredible packaging material, and the rest is history. So, thanks to a quirky idea, now you can ship fragile items—and enjoy a good pop-fest while unpacking them.
This is the kind of thinking Wittgenstein was talking about. Silly ideas are like bubble wrap for the brain—they cushion us from the pressure of taking life too seriously and often lead to breakthroughs.
Whether you’re popping bubbles or brainstorming your next big idea, letting yourself have fun is often the key to creativity and success.
So, on this Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, I encourage you to embrace the silly. Grab a sheet of bubble wrap and go wild for a few minutes. Let the joy of those little pops remind you that life’s not just about solving problems—it’s about having fun along the way.
And remember Wittgenstein’s words: it’s the silly things that pave the way for brilliance.... Isn't it?
That’s all for today. Thanks for joining me and I’ll see you tomorrow, same pod time, same pod station for another Daily Quote.
