Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco had promised a vote last week on a bipartisan infrastructure bill already approved by the Senate. But, that was before a fight between progressives and moderates over a far more expensive spending bill forced a delay. Now, negotiations continue and the vote on both measures has been postponed.
Two moderate US Senators object to the $3.5 trillion price tag on President Biden’s Build Back Better bill, and progressives balked at approving the $1 trillion infrastructure bill, without passage of the larger package at the same time. This has been a real test of Speaker Pelosi’s leadership, and highlighted the schism between the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and the more moderate wing. Meanwhile, Congress also needs to raise the country’s debt limit, or the US could default on its debt for the first time ever.
