How Does Democracy Work With a Citizenry Increasingly Uninformed & Fearful?

The data shows that Americans wildly overestimate the number of people in this country who are NOT like them. And Americans wildly underestimate the number of people in this country who ARE like them. This misinformation creates fear. And politicians feed on this fear. What do we do about this?
