Bible translation used in today’s episode: Ch. 1 GWT
It’s Epistles Sunday. We’ll read 3 John, and we’ll have a time of prayer. I’m calling this episode “Ministry By Proxy.“
3 John is addressed to a man named Gaius. There seem to be several men with this name in the Bible, one of whom was baptized by Paul. We don’t really know anything more specific about this Gaius, except that John considered him a dear friend.
John commends Gaius for the good reports he hears about him, and for the fact that he supports those who travel about, preaching the Gospel. It is a good thing to support missionaries and others who are on the front lines, sharing the Gospel. Even though we may not personally go out to preach the Good News, our support for them makes us an important, vital and integral part of the team.
Then John has a warning against a man named Diotrephes, and good words about one named Demetrius. John says, “Never imitate evil, but imitate good. The person who does good is from God. The person who does evil has never seen God.”

Third John. From the church leader, my dear friend gas, whom I love, because we share the truth, my dear friend, I know that you’re spiritually Well, I pray that you’re doing well in every other way, and that you’re healthy. I was very happy when some believers came and told us that you were living according to the truth. Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children are living according to the truth. Dear friend, you’re showing your faith in whatever you do for other believers, especially when they’re your guests. These believers have told the congregation about your love, you will do well to support them on their trip in a way that proves you belong to God. After all, they went on their trip to serve the one named Christ, and they didn’t accept any help from the people to whom they went. We must support believers who go on trips like this, so that we can work together with them in spreading the truth. I wrote a letter to the congregation. But Diotrephes, who loves to be in charge won’t accept us. For this reason, when I come, I will bring up what he’s doing. He’s not satisfied with saying malicious things about us. He also refuses to accept the believers we send his guests, even tries to stop others who want to accept them, and attempts to throw those people out of the congregation. and, dear friend, never imitate evil, but imitate good. The person who does good as from God, the person who does evil has never seen God. and everyone, including the truth itself says good things about Demetrius, we also say good things about him. and you know that what we say is true. and I have a lot to write to you. However, I’d rather not write, I hope to visit you very soon, then we can talk things over personally, please be with you. Your friends here send you their greetings, greet each of our friends by name. The book of Third John is addressed to a man named Gaius. and there seems to be several men with his name in the Bible, one of whom was baptized by Paul, we don’t really know anything more specific about this case, except that John considered him to be a very close friend. John commends gays for the good reports he hears about him. and for the fact that he supports those who travel around preaching the gospel, it’s a good thing to support missionaries, and others who are on the front lines sharing the gospel, because even though we may not personally go out to preach the good news, our support for them makes us an important, vital and integral part of the team. and then John has a warning against a man named Diotrephes. and he has good words to say about a person named Demetrius John says, never imitate evil, but imitate good. The person who does good is from God, the person who does evil has never seen God. So Beloved, we need to be aware of those around us, and we need to watch to see what their fruit is. So according to Third John ministry by proxy is a thing to support those who share the gospel is commended. You have thoughts or questions, let me hear from you. Send to Boostagram or call the Lifespring family hotline or go to the comments page or write an email. Tomorrow will be the law Monday and our reading will be Deuteronomy 29 through 31

I have a favor to ask of you. It’s probably been over 15 years since I was ever the least bit interested in Podcast Awards of any kind. But there’s a Christian podcast conference coming up at the end of this month. and they’re taking votes from podcast listeners on Best Male podcast host, Best Female podcast host best solo podcast and best interview podcast. Now, I know that there are much bigger podcasts than this humble little show. But it would mean a lot to me if you would cast your vote if you think this show or me as your host deserve to have it. As I’ve told you, I’m wrapping up the Lifespring! One Year Bible when we complete this season at the end of this month, and it would warm my heart. If you would go over to Lifespringmedia.com slash Ignite and vote. It’d be kind of a nice way to wrap things up. It was a podcaster that most of you know who nominated the light Lifespring! One Year Bible to get the show on the ballot, and I would be really embarrassed if no one voted. It’ll just take a minute or two of your time. Voting ends this Saturday, September 23 Lifespringmedia.com slash ignite will take you over to the voting website

James Garner sent a note. He said, “I was listening to your description of shoulder pain and thought it sounded a lot like when a diver stays underwater too long, and they get the bends over decompression sickness. Bends often causes air bubbles to settle in major joints like knees or elbows causing individuals to bend over in excruciating pain. That sounds familiar. I wonder if a decompression chamber would have eased you out of it. Anyway, I’m going to tuck this away in my head in case I have to experience a similar surgery. Hope you get that gas out sooner than later.” Well, thank you, James. and you know, I never thought about this being similar to the bends. But now that you mentioned it, it does sound similar. and then I got to thinking that I should do more of a search for post laparoscopic shoulder pain. I found a lot of articles when I did that and boil it all down. As many as 80% of patients experience mild to severe shoulder pain after laparoscopic abdominal surgery. It seems that the trapped co2 Gas migrates up to the diaphragm which can cause irritation of a specific nerve in the diaphragm. and then that irritation is experienced as referred pain in the shoulder because the two locations are somehow connected to the same nerve. So there really isn’t any gas in the shoulder. But the shoulder is experiencing the pain of the irritated diaphragm. I read that the pain usually resolves within three to five days. and it can be helped by taking warm baths or drinking warm liquids, which warms the diaphragm and helps the co2 to dissipate quicker. So this makes a lot of sense to me. When I took my walks, the shoulder pain got worse probably because being upright made the co2 float up to the diaphragm. and the exercise from The Walking made the diaphragm work harder. So the irritation increased which made the shoulder hurt more kind of like a 1-2-3 thing. I only wish I had known that this was a common side effect of the surgery, it would have helped me have a lot less anxiety about it and would have saved me an expensive trip to the ER. So I wrote a note to my surgeon to suggest that she tell her patients that there’s a good chance that they’ll experience this. She’s a young doctor, I joke that she looks like she’s about 12 years old. But at my age most doctors look very young anyway, my regular GP I call it Doogie Howser, so I’m anxious to see how she responds anyway. So Beloved, if you ever need this kind of surgery now, you know, if they say the more you know, thank you so much for the note James.

prayer requests and praises. This prayer request came in to me a few days ago from Sister Brittaney. She said, “Sean and I applied for a rental in Arizona. We’ve been blessed that we could live with my parents for the past few months upon moving from California, but we’re excited to move closer to my job, which is also our church. Please pray that the rental goes through and that we can put down roots in the community.” and then the very next day this came in from Brother Sean. He said, “Hi Steve, I think Brittaney sent a prayer request in about us finding a home to rent that prayer has been answered. We just got approved for a two story home in a nice area with a grass lawn in the backyard great for dog and toddler. and this is rather rare in the Phoenix area. We also have beautifully maintained walking paths and playgrounds nearby. I think we’re going to love it and give God the credit for navigating us to this exact home.” Well praise the Lord brother Sean and sister Brittaney. That is awesome. It’ll be nice to be in your own home again, I’m sure God is indeed good. and then Kathi got some bad news at her last trip to the City of Hope her cancer markers were up 281 points. That sounds bad. But what we need to remember is that her doctor has said that he’s more concerned with PET scans, CT scans and MRI scans, because markers can fluctuate. Now the good news is that her platelets were up so she was able to have an epidural to help with her pain. We’re waiting to hear from her doctor in about a month as to where we go from her with the cancer. and then I have a praise report. The pain in my shoulder is much better. It’s not gone. I took a walk earlier today before I read that research. and it did hurt but it is better as I sit here and move my arm you know to move the mouse and things like that I feel no pain. So that’s good and I am healing well from the surgery itself. So again, thank you for your prayers. Now. Let’s pray. Our loving Heavenly Father we thank you for the little book of Third John and the reminder to support those who are doing the work of sharing the good news, missionaries and others who preach the gospel need a team behind them, praying for them and supplying them with what is needed to do the work. Thank you, Lord, for the ones you’ve sent this season to help me do the work you called me to do. You’ve given them generous hearts, and I pray that You would bless them many, many times over for what they’ve done for their prayers and their donations and their notes of encouragement. We thank you and we praise you, Lord, for sending Sean and Brittaney to their new home. We pray that you will fill their house with your love and your peace, and may your presence be felt there from day one. Bless this family as they seek to serve you. We pray now for Kathi Lord, we pray, Lord, that these new numbers for her cancer markers are just a momentary jump, and that the cancer would continue to be on the decline. We pray that the various scans will continue to show a retreat of the disease. Help Kathi with the pain she’s feeling Lord, touch her body, we pray that you would heal her completely. and thank you, Father that my surgery went well. I pray that the healing will continue and will be complete. and thank you for showing me the literature about the shoulder pain, it makes it easier to wait for it to dissipate. Thank you that it is already much better Lord. and now Father, I thank you for the Lifespring family. Bless each one today and everyone who’s been with me on this journey through Your Word, whether they’ve been here since day one, or joined some time during the year. Bless them for their commitment to read or listen along with us. I pray that this year has just been the beginning of a lifetime of reading your word every day. We pray these things in Jesus name, amen. Our next time of prayer together will be Wednesday said in your prayers or prayer requests so that we can pray with you and for you.
