Defending Press Freedoms in the Twitter Age

KCBS Radio In Depth

Episode • May 31, 2019 • 27m

Journalism is one of those weird professions that technically anyone can just go out and do: Especially in the age of twitter, reporting the news is as easy as pointing a phone, snapping a picture, and posting it online.

So what does it even mean to call yourself a journalist in 2019? Which reporters are worthy of our attention, and, critically, what protections should they be given?

That is a set of questions that has become even more pressing since the furor set off this past month by a police raid on the San Francisco home and office of freelance journalist Bryan Carmody following the leak of a police report into the death of San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi.

On this edition of In Depth, we discuss the raid and look for answers to those questions with the help of some experts in the journalism field to find out just what this teachable moment has to teach us.

Host: KCBS reporter Keith Menconi

Guests:

  • KCBS reporter Jenna Lane
  • James Wheaton, founder and senior counsel at The First Amendment Project, a public interest law firm
  • Richard Craig, a professor of journalism and mass communications at San Jose State University
