On the eighth day after His birth Christ was circumcised and received the name "Jesus" (which means "savior"). Thus, New Year's Day is celebrated in many churches as the Name Day of Christ, and fittingly so. But there is deep meaning to the circumcision of the Christ Child: this is the first instance of His shedding blood for sin, and this when He who gave the Law (Torah) as God is put under the Law as man in the Bris or ceremony of circumcision. Dr. Zeile points out that this shows that CHrist's whole life, and not just its climax on the cross, is the sacrifice for our sin. This meditation is accompanied by elements of the New Year's Eve service including the Liturgical Proclamation of the Birth of Christ, Gloria in Excelsis, and Litany on the Name of Jesus.
