Search Engine Journal shared a week ago about a question posed to John Mueller which was basically - if Google’s machine learning is going to get so good at knowing what a page is about, will SEO become obsolete?

I'm guessing the person who asked the question is either a business owner who might not know exactly WHY they are doing their own SEO, other than proving "penny-wise, pound-foolish".
But it does show a peculiar lack of SEO purpose and maybe that's why John didn't know how to really respond - was he implying something or not wanting to take a lot of time explaining the purpose of SEO.
