Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for July 28th.
It’s National Soccer Day, and whether you're a die-hard fan who yells at the TV like the referee can hear you or casually play for fun, today’s the perfect time to appreciate the world's most beloved sport.
Ever wonder why football is called soccer in North America? It used to be called association football in England and they abbreviated association to assoc. And the kids started calling it soccer... it didn't stick as everyone just went with football but not Americans because they didn't want any confusion with American football.Anyway, soccer is a beautiful mix of endurance, strategy, sportsmanship and, occasionally, world-class acting when it comes to faking injuries.
In honor of the day, here’s a quote from one of the sport's greats - Pelé once said:
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.”
Now, Pelé wasn’t just stringing together motivational buzzwords to sound cool. He lived this. He was the kind of player who turned football fields into canvases and painted masterpieces with his feet. And his words remind you that success, whether you're on a pitch, at your desk, or just trying to get through your Monday email avalanche, is built on the same foundation: passion backed by relentless effort.
So today, channel a bit of Pelé’s spirit. Kick off your goals — pun absolutely intended — with purpose. Whether you're juggling projects or juggling an actual soccer ball, remember it’s the love for what you do that fuels the long game.My son loves soccer... he plays soccer, he's a soccer referee and a little volunteer coaching. And he watches soccer and he is one of those die hard fans that yells at the TV for sure.
That's going to do it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for now but I'll be back tomorrow - same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
