Last week, after the crack in an offshore oil pipeline crack leaking more than 126,000 gallons onto coastal areas and beaches in Southern California, attention turned to clean-up and mitigation of the oily goo.

Yet the spill also turned attention to the difficult relationship and balance between coastal protection and oil production off the coast of California.
