Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon narrowly avoided
having to face a recall, as the petition drive to drum him out of office fell short.
LA will not go through what San Francisco just did, with DA
Chesa Boudin recalled from office.
The campaign to recall Gascon, who of course was both police chief
and District Attorney in San Francisco before he moved to Los Angeles to run
for DA there, was similar to the one that removed Boudin from office, but Gascon
learned from some of Boudin’s campaign mistakes, and the people behind the
petition drive in LA just couldn’t gather quite enough valid signatures before the
deadline. Gascon gets to finish his term, and will be up for re-election in 2024.
Meanwhile, while Chesa Boudin has decided not to run for his old job in this
fall’s special election to finish out the rest of his term, he is already making
moves that have some people wondering if he plans to try again when the DA job
comes up again in the next regularly scheduled election next year in 2023.
