Allison Dillard joins Amanda and Vickie on today’s episode and they dive deep into math and the different ways that you can help your student, whether you’re a teacher or a parent.

If your student is struggling, listen in to learn more about the problems that students face in learning math and the skills that will help them master it!

Allison is an author and math professor at Irvine Valley College who fell in love with math in high school. For twenty years, she’s been teaching and tutoring students in math to help them overcome the learning obstacles associated with the subject.

Show Highlights:

  • Allison shares how she started tutoring while still in high school and her path to math during college and beyond.
  • Allison discusses what led to her writing her books.
  • Her books on math don’t actually contain math, but rather all of the “non-math stuff” that deals with the skills needed to succeed in math.
  • From an early age, the school subjects we excel at or are weak in get ingrained in our heads and often we feel like we can’t improve on our weakest subjects.
  • Skills are always difficult before they become easy, so it’s just a matter of practicing until you get stronger.
  • One of the biggest ways for parents to help their children in math is to remind them that improvement comes with effort.
  • If a parent is bad at math and relays that to their child, then the child might use that as an excuse to not make the effort in learning the skills that will help them to succeed at math.
  • Crush Math Now: High-Impact Strategies for Students Who Struggle with Math (Crush Now Series) dives deep into the problems that students face, such as procrastination, lack of motivation, math anxiety, lack of confidence, and lack of grit.
  • Allison offers her tips for helping your student improve in math.
