Governor Gavin Newsom is asking lawmakers to draft legislation to crack down on crimes like retail thefts and auto burglaries, which have been in the news a lot lately. What he's not asking for are any changes to Prop 47, a voter-passed proposition that eased penalties on people convicted of those types of crimes. Prop 47 reclassified certain nonviolent offenses as misdemeanors instead of felonies, and was passed to prevent prison overcrowding in 2014.
