James M Vaughn is a history professor at the University of Chicago, a Marxist, and the author of the essay "The bourgeois revolution(s) and the American Revolution." In this interview Vaughn explains how civil society emerged from feudalism, how socialists originally conceived of the role of the State, and why it is that Marxists should defend the bill of rights.
