David led a difficult life, filled with hand to hand combat, running from Saul and his soldiers, family intrigue, treasonous plots against him. He was often afraid. In Psalm 27, David expressed his confidence in God’s ability to deliver him and protect him from the things he feared most. In the middle of his statement of confidence, David launched into a desperate plea for God’s help, then ended the Psalm with a repeat of his confidence in God. From this Psalm (and other scriptures) we learn (1) fear is normal; we should expect it (2) we do not need to be fearful because God is sovereign and God is good (3) when we are afraid, we should go to God in humble, desperate prayer and (4) take courage and wait on God. | Psalm 27
