Have you ever felt utterly helpless? A situation when circumstances are completely out of your control, and you just have to hope that something, anything, happens to change those things and you can’t do anything about it. When we look at the ancient world, we easily forget that they lived lives that were largely out of their control. When illness came, or difficult times, there was often nothing they could do about it. They knew both what hope looked like, and what false hope felt like. They were desperate for rescue, and when con-artists offered healing (as they regularly did) they were hopeful, but sceptical. And so, when the early Christians started seeing genuine healing happen, everyone took notice. Questions were asked, and the evidence was undeniable. People began to see that there really was genuine hope, and that God really was at work.
