She is a U.S. Navy Veteran, visually impaired, and spent her entire professional career in Media and Public Relations. Her job with the V.A. led her to work at the Phoenix V.A. Hospital. A change of leadership led to negative quality of care issues, including extensive delays in treatment. Paula began the extensive process of alerting higher-ups to the issues, which led to national investigations and much-needed changes. In the meantime, she states that she "suffered retaliation" by the V.A. Hospital Management. 

Her work and story led to her writing the book A Sacred Duty and also her Blog.
