Circuses are places of fun and delight. Or at least they are for most people.

But Vicky was not ‘most people’.

Vicky lived in the circus.

Now living in a circus sounds like the most wonderful place to live on Earth. Vicky was allowed to eat candy floss as big as clouds and stay up until midnight. But Vicky was not allowed to be IN the circus because she was a girl.
