British expatriates are both 'insiders' for British culture but also 'outsiders'. Living outside of the British Isles for a decade or more naturally changes our perceptions of our home country and home culture.
As Caine (in Fuzhou, China) says; "being an expat... has broadened my horizons about British culture, it's made me question things that I assumed, things that I thought to be true based on my own experience it's made me learn a lot more about British history, about how things are done differently in the UK, in different places, and so on... I don't think this could ever possibly have happened if I wasn't an expat".
We also find, especially living in cultures far removed from our own, that events such as Christmas or Bonfire Night don't 'just happen'. So, how can we re-create these, and can we re-create these, living far from home?
