As the early ballots come pouring in for the recall election, with the election day itself on September 14th, one thing is clear right now. The early voters are overwhelmingly white, as in almost 70% of the ballots already returned. Latinos are the largest single ethnic group in California, constituting 39% of the population, about 28% of registered voters, second largest block after white voters.
So far, they are not participating at nearly that level. With only 11% of Latinos have voted so far, as opposed to about a third of white voters, who have cast their ballots so far.
So why is this happening? Will the Latinos turn out on election day?
To answer these questions, KCBS Radio political reporter and host of the segment, Doug Sovern, spoke with Dr. Manuel Pastor, USC Equity Research Institute.
