Niven and Pournell are great writers. Pournell had a lot of great science articals on his web page. his son, Admiral (ret) Pournell has taken over running it.

If you have a dirty generator, yes a UPS will help but the ideal type of UPS is called a double conversion ups. These convert power to charge the battery and run all the computer stuff from the batteries. This means the power is completely clean.

thanks, good episode. I especially liked the segment on prepping for probable local life disruptions is ALSO prepping for greater impact much lesser probability teotwawki disasters. I have personally lived through 3 major job layoffs, at least 6 power outages of 3 days or more, one divorce 1 earthquake and a couple of life altering health events in my 66 year life. I have never experienced a nuclear war, EMP or Zombie apocalypse.
