Earlier this week, the Albanese government released its Defence Strategic Review - the biggest and most significant review into Australia’s military structure in decades.  The review found that the risks Australia faces are “profound”. And that our military “is not fully fit for purpose”. So on the one hand, the government is considering increasing military spending, but it also faces pressure ahead of the May budget to increase some welfare payments. This pressure comes from all sides, the social services, lobby, charities business and its own backbench.
