The California Republican Party is going to embrace two key election tactics that it shunned in the past. The GOP, both nationally and here in the Golden State, has decided to go all-in on voting by mail and ballot harvesting. Remember, Donald Trump, both as a candidate and as president, scorned voting by mail, early voting and other methods the Democratic Party has used to boost voter turnout, claiming they were fraudulent ways to rig an election and not trustworthy and urging Republican voters to just vote in person on Election Day. That came back to haunt the GOP as Democrats used those tools to their advantage in 2020 and 2022. Now, the Republicans have decided, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and they’re launching a national campaign they’re calling “Bank Your Vote.” Today, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and the leadership of the California Republican Party had a conference call, explaining this plan to us. For more on this, Megan Goldsby, Doug Sovern, and Brett Burkhart spoke with Shawn Steel, the longtime Republican National Committeeman for California.
