What makes it different is that it is both a defensive and offensive weapon. To understand this, don't disconnect the Spirit from the Word of God. It is the Spirit that makes the word a sword in our lives. The word functions like a sword in the Spirit's hands. The bible is the sword of the Spirit because he inspired it, because it enables us to understand and believe, and because he makes it powerful in the believer's life. To "wield" it effectively, we must not come to the scriptures with an unrepentant heart or preformed judgments. Rather, prayerfully come, comparing scripture to scripture, and consulting the Spirit so that we are able to understand it.Ephesians 6:17-20 English Standard Version (ESV) 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
