Indwelling sin opposes God by force and by deceit. We began consideration of its working by deceit in chapter 8, and this in its general workings to keep the soul from considering both the mind's vileness, and God and His grace. How sin, by its deceit, endeavors to draw off the mind from attending to the holy frame for walking with God in which the soul ought to be preserved, therefore has been declared. We proceed now to show how sin by its deceit does the same work in reference to those special duties by which the designs, workings, and prevalence of it may in a special manner be opposed and prevented.
